14th Annual Type Classification, Materiel Release Ceremony Held

Nine items type classified, nine items materiel released in 2003

By Myra Hess

At a ceremony held to conclude successes made in 2003, ARDEC, in conjunction with the Picatinny Chapter of the National Defense Industrial Association, honored those teams/organizations/individuals that have made significant contributions that led to Type Classifications and also those that led to the Full Materiel Release of ARDEC developed items.

Ralph Campoli, president of NDIA, welcomed everyone to the fourteenth annual Type Classification ceremony.

"It is an honor and privilege to recognize all these organizations, the people and their accomplishments," he said. "Type Classification/Material Materiel Release Honorees Release is a culmination of the intense dedication, skill and hard work by members of the Picatinny community and industry to provide superior firepower capabilities to our Armed Forces. "We salute you and thank you."

Sgt. Maj. Delatha Bell, representing the user, said that Type Classification is important to the soldier in the field. He then led a moment of silence to honor our armed forces, past and present, followed by a reading of a short poem about freedom. "We can't become complacent," he said. "There is too much at stake Ð the lives of our Soldiers and our freedom."

He continued by saying that "through type classification, we make our Soldiers more lethal Ð we want them to be advanced and to bring them home alive. The things we do here are important. The Soldier is the user, but you are the producer. Picatinny is vital to the Soldiers' survival."

ARDEC Technical Director Michael Devine also spoke to all the attendees and thanked NDIA for sponsoring the event all these years.

"This is a great day as we recognize government/industry teams for successful type classification and materiel release items," he said. "This is in essence a graduation ceremony of our products."

Following Devine, and on behalf of the Program Executive Officer for Ammunition, Rene Kiebler, also congratulated the Type Classification/Materiel Release teams recognized this year.
