Members of Picatinny Arsenal Fire & Emergency Services conducted the 2nd annual Junior Firefighter Camp on 5 & 6 AUG 2010, supervised by Training Captain Barrella.
On day 1, campers were introduced to life as a Federal Firefighter, beginning with attending a roll call and shift change. LTC Koehler, Chief Guidetti, and Assistant Chief Which briefed the new "recruits" who were then shown around the new firehouse. From there, Captain Barrella provided a guided tour of the Morris County public Safety Training Academy. After a tasty baked ziti lunch prepared by Firefighter Pete Sigreto, evolutions were conducted with the department's state of the art fire extinguisher trainer by Firefighters John Vidal and Dave Cascone.
On day 2, campers learned how to maintain and clean the fire apparatus and station. The day then progressed with the learning of basic CPR skills, instructed by Firefighters Jeff Baird and John Vidal. Lunch consisted of hamburgers, hot dogs, and French fries prepared by Firefighters Bill Koferl and Jeff Baird. The afternoon's hands on evolutions were guided by Captain Barrella and Firefighters John Vidal, Dave Cascone, and Jason Brown. Evolutions included learning how to properly don and doff firefighting personal protective equipment and self contained breathing apparatus, climbing an aerial ladder, controlling a fire hose, and properly caring for an injured person by placing them on a backboard and into a stokes basket. The final exercise required the campers to don chemical protective clothing and be decontaminated. |
