Off Post Housing

The Housing Services Office (HSO), located in Building 117B, second floor, may assist you in finding local rental property and provide referrals to resources in the area. Northern New Jersey is a high cost of living area and realtors often charge a fee in which the perspective tenant pays once a lease is signed. This fee is often up to ten percent of the yearly lease cost. Rental costs tend to be higher than most areas, but suitable housing can be found for under your monthly allowance for housing (Basic Allowance for Housing). HSO contact information is: 973-724-3506. It is in your best interest to contact Military Personnel as early as possible. This will provide you with adequate time to search for housing prior to your arrival, possibly avoiding any unnecessary costs.

Single Soldiers

As of 30 September 2008 there will be no Barracks space for any single Soldier or Geographical Bachelor. You must contact the Resident Communities Office/Housing Services Office for a Certificate of Non-Availability. The Housing Services Office is available to assist in locating housing off post. Contact the Residential Communities Office/Housing Services Office at, 973-724-3506.

High Cost of Living Area

Picatinny Arsenal is located in Northern New Jersey, a high cost of living area. Military assigned to stations in Northern New Jersey are authorized Cost of Living Allowance.

Basic Allowance for Housing

BAH is an allowance to offset the cost of housing when you do not receive government-provided housing.
Your BAH depends upon your location, pay grade and whether you have dependents. BAH rates are set
by surveying the cost of rental properties in each geographic location. The rates are established such that
members in each pay grade, independent of location, pay approximately the same out-of-pocket costs. Therefore,
BAH rates in high-cost areas will be much greater than those in low-cost areas. BAH rates are published
on the Per Diem Committee web page
https://secureapp2.hqda.pentagon.mil/perdiem/bah.html

Lodging

Recreational Lodging, in the form of a mobile home trailer, is offered on our installation through our
Community Recreation Division. This is often utilized as a temporary living arrangement until housing
is found on or off post. Rates and availability details can be obtained by calling 973-724-4014.
